COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West Conference announced today that Boise State University has accepted an invitation to join the MWC as its 10th member institution, effective July 1, 2011.

“We are pleased and excited to welcome Boise State University to the Mountain West Conference,” said Commissioner Craig Thompson. “Since our inception just 11 short years ago, the Mountain West has experienced tremendous success, and the addition of Boise State will further enhance that strength. The MWC continues to strategize regarding potential membership scenarios and bringing Boise State into the Conference is an important part of that evolution.”

“The invitation to join the Mountain West Conference reflects the excellence that Boise State University has demonstrated academically and athletically,” said Boise State President Robert Kustra. “It will be a privilege to compete and partner with such a successful group of member institutions. This move is in the best interests of Boise State’s future, and the university is excited to be part of one of the nation’s most outstanding conferences.”

The Mountain West Conference was founded with eight members in 1998. Boise State is the second institution to join the Mountain West since that time; TCU became a member in 2005.

Wyoming’s junior senator John Barrasso is applauding the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers’decision to reduce the level of the chemical contaminant trichloroethylene (TCE) in the city of Cheyenne’s water supply to an undetectable level.

The Corp of Engineers is using an advanced aeration system to remove TCE from the water.

Barrasso in a written statement to city officials says families who live in Cheyenne deserve access to clean, safe water throughout their community.

He goes on to say It’s good to see that problem will be resolved without Wyoming taxpayers having to foot the bill.”

In the early 1990’s, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the City of Cheyenne found evidence of trichloroethylene (TCE), an industrial solvent used in cleaning rocket motors, in the city’s water wells.

Wyoming will receive nearly a 704-thousand Medicaid fraud settlement from AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals for allegedly engaging in an off-label marketing campaign that improperly promoted its antipsychotic drug, Seroquel (SAR-A-QUILL).

Wyoming Attorney General Bruce Salzburg (pictured) says the Wyoming Medicaid program will receive the money as part of a national Medicaid fraud settlement. AstraZeneca will pay a total of $520 million in damages and penalties to various states and the federal government for its conduct.

AstraZeneca promoted Seroquel for uses that were not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, including treating conditions such as aggression, Alzheimer’s disorder, anger management, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dementia and sleeplessness. Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication used to treat psychological disorders.

Salzburg says sixty-six percent of Wyoming’s share will be returned to the federal government for its original contribution to Wyoming Medicaid funds. The state will retain the remaining 34% of the settlement, which will be returned to the Medicaid budget.
