In Laramie, University of Wyoming officials say 42 non-academic staff positions have been eliminated and filling 12 open faculty positions is being put on hold. UW is taking steps to prepare for anticipated state budget cuts in the fiscal year that begins July 1.
The reductions, which will be made over a two-year period, have started now, before Governor Mead and the Wyoming State Legislature take final action on UW’s budget. University president Dr. Tom Buchanan (pictured) says this is being done to avoid possible employee layoffs when when the final budget for fiscal 2014 is put in place.
In a news release, Buchanan says this is prudent action on the part of the university, but he also says each of these eliminated positions represents a loss of UW’s capacity to accomplish its mission.
