JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) — A 46-year-old Georgia man is presumed dead after he was swept away in the Snake River Canyon while trying to help his 10-year-old son.

Lincoln County rescue crews have been looking for Joel Fegarido, of Newnan, Ga., since Sunday but say that the search will be now be scaled back and volunteers will be focusing on recovering his body. Lincoln County Sheriff Shane Johnson says Fegarido fell near rapids in the Snake River Canyon Saturday evening.

The family was in the area for a picnic. Witnesses say Fegarido was not wearing a life jacket and fell into the river while helping his son, who was struggling in the water.

Johnson says several people on boats followed Fegarido after he fell into the water and tried to catch up with him but were unsuccessful.
