Lawsuit Filed To Allow Ayers To Speak At U.W.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A lawsuit filed in federal court in Cheyenne seeks a court order allowing former 1960s radical William Ayers to speak on the University of Wyoming campus.

The lawsuit filed Thursday is being brought by Ayers and UW student Meg Lanker. It contends the university violated their constitutional rights to free speech and assembly.

UW spokeswoman Jessica Lowell declined comment.

Lanker says the university has denied her request for Ayers to speak on campus.

Lanker invited Ayers after the university canceled his campus appearance set for last week after the college received hundreds of complaints. Most of the complaints cited Ayers’ violent anti-war past.

Ayers now is an education professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

Lanker says her motivation is strictly free speech and not political.
