Cold Front Crosses State Today, Cooler Saturday

By DayWeather, Inc. posted May 18, 2012 at 9:05AM

The state will see better chances for showers and thunderstorms today and Saturday thanks to a passing cold front.  Western and northern portions of the state will see showers and thunderstorms develop later today.  They will spread south and east this evening and tonight.

Temperatures will be a bit cooler today in northern and western areas.  However, in the south daytime highs will still reach into the upper 70s and lower 80s helped along by plenty of sun and developing strong southwest winds ahead of the cold front.

Statewide, cooler temperatures will filter in behind the front for Saturday.  Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will have a chance to develop in nearly all areas of the state.

Federal Agency Again Rejects Pipeline Plan

By Mick Birge posted May 18, 2012 at 7:03AM

Governor Matt Mead says he’s glad a federal agency has for a second time denied a permit requested by a Colorado businessman who wants to build a 500-mile pipeline to carry water from southwestern Wyoming to Colorado’s Front Range.

Mead says he remains opposed to the project. The Biodiversity Conservation Alliance, one of the many conservation groups opposed to the project, says the pipeline would hurt endangered species and cost local jobs.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Thursday denied the request from Aaron Million of Fort Collins, Colo., to reconsider its denial earlier of his permit.

Million proposes to draw water from Flaming Gorge Reservoir in southwestern Wyoming and pipe it as far as Pueblo, Colo.

Million says he intends to reapply for a federal permit and is working to secure funding.

The kids finally have a rifle of their own

By Ty Stockton posted May 18, 2012 at 4:00AM

I got my oldest son a lever-action .22 a few years ago, but until he grows a little bit more, I’ll be shooting it a lot more than he does. That’s not true of the new gun I got my boys. Listen to today’s show to find out why it took me a while to get excited about it, but also why I’m more excited about a gun I have no hope of shooting than any of the guns I can shoot.

Report: State Capitol Needs More Security Measures In Place

By Mick Birge posted May 17, 2012 at 6:50AM

A security assessment of the State Capitol building in Cheyenne questions the state’s ability to respond to or prevent a violent incident.

Specifically, the assessment advised that Wyoming should increase its security staffing levels if it wants to continue the Capitol’s open environment.

The security assessment was performed by Colorado law enforcement agencies, including its State Patrol and Office of Homeland Security, who visited Cheyenne during the past legislative session.

The full report is confidential because of its sensitive security details.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Klief Guenther briefed lawmakers on some of the assessment’s findings during a recent legislative meeting.

He said possible solutions include adding security checkpoints or metal detectors or boosting security staff. Currently nine full-time troopers are responsible for patrolling the Capitol.
